Design and Build of Staging Platform for Rail Civils Contractor

Civil Engineering firm CK Contracts, asked the team at Burnhouse Engineering to design and manufacture a staging platform to house track-side electrical cabinets for a project at  Carstairs Junction. The client provided layout drawings with specifications, and from this our Design Engineer used SolidWorks to produce a 3D model of the platform. The benefits of 3D modelling are that parts can be tested in an online space to minimise risk, rather than having their first test once they are fabricated and built, with could reveal costly revisions. Burnhouse’s quality management processes always include a trial build, but the chances of mistakes are greatly reduced when designed using 3D modelling.

Design and build using 3d modelling

Upon sign-off, the platform was fabricated using carbon steel in the Burnhouse workshop using 125×65 PFC Structure, with 25NB Handrails and Kickflats with GRP Flooring panels. The platform was then trial built for fitment alignment before being dismantled for galvanisation. Once complete the item was trial built for a second time to ensure quality control, before being dismantled and delivered to site for installation during vacant possession of Carstairs Junction.

The platform was installed over a single nightshift by the Burnhouse team before handing over to the client. There are three platforms remaining, which will be fabricated and installed over the coming weeks. The platforms are designed to be integrated with Seimens Control Cabinets.
